Tan Sri Alexander Lee Category: Official Sport: Squash Year Inducted: 2000 Born on 25th of May 1939, he was the son of one of the pioneers in Malaysian politics and sports, Tun H.S. Lee. But Alexander Lee went on to make his own mark in the political and sporting world, and became one of our most dynamic and knowledgeable sports leaders. Alex Lee, as he was popularly called, had his early education at Victoria Institution Kuala Lumpur, before proceeding to Cambridge University to study law. He returned to Malaysia to practice law and entered the political arena in 1978. He most notably founded the Gerakan Party of Malaysia, of which he was the Vice President. He also served as Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Public Works and National Unity over a period of 17 years. His affinity for sports started to show from an early age. He represented his University in rowing, and represented Malaysia in golf and tennis - sports he had undoubtedly picked up due to his father’s influence. Apart from that, Alex was also an accomplished squash player, skier, swimmer and scuba diver. Many national and international sports bodies acknowledged his unique qualities and skills. He was President of the National Squash Rackets and Volleyball Associations, and Vice Chairman of the Commonwealth Games Federation. He was also elected Vice President of OCM in 1992. One of his most significant contributions to Malaysian sport was in leading the Malaysian Bid Committee to win the hosting of the 1998 Commonwealth Games, which turned out to be a resounding success. A scuba diving mishap on 31st October 1999 off the coast of Papua New Guinea robbed Tan Sri Alex Lee of his life, and robbed OCM and Malaysia of one of its most vibrant leaders. He was 60 years old, and remained an active and competitive athlete to his very last day. While his easygoing and gregarious personality, vast knowledge, and humility have been etched into the hearts of those who knew him; his contributions to Malaysian sport have been etched into the annals of sporting history for eternity.
