5th OCM Tan Sri Alex Lee Charity Golf 2007

The Olympic Council of Malaysia is organizing the 5th OCM – Tan Sri Alex Lee Charity Golf for the Tan Sri Alex Lee Athletes’ Education Fund on 11th September 2007, at Bunga Raya Course, Saujana Golf & Country Club. The objectives of the charity golf are to raise funds for the mentioned Education Fund and to encourage interaction between the various National Sports Associations, raising the profile of the OCM through charity and also in memory of the late Tan Sri Alex Lee for his tremendous contribution to the nation and sport.

The Tan Sri Alex Lee Athletes’ Education Fund was set up in 1999 in memory of the late Tan Sri Alex Lee, lawyer, banker, deputy minister, athlete and sports leader. His untimely demise in 1999 robbed Malaysian sports of an outstanding sports leader and an exceptional human being.

At the time of his death in a scuba-diving accident off the coast of Papua New Guinea, the late Tan Sri Alex Lee was Vice-President of the Olympic Council of Malaysia, Vice-Chairman of the Commonwealth Games Federation and President of the Squash Rackets Association of Malaysia, besides also being involved in hockey and volleyball. He played a major role in bringing the Commonwealth Games to Malaysia and getting squash into the Commonwealth, Asian and SEA Games programme. He was himself a great all-round athlete, excelling in golf and squash and participating in many other sports including skiing and scuba-diving.

The Tan Sri Alex Lee Athletes’ Education Fund which will be used to provide study grants to needy present and former national athletes to undertake tertiary education is an appropriate and fitting recognition of Tan Sri Alex Lee’s contribution to society at large and sports in particular.

To date through generous donations of friends and well-wishers, the Commonwealth Games Federation and the OCM, the Fund stands at RM 431,936.16 We have set a target of RM1.0 million so that the revenue generated from the Fund could provide at least four (4) annual grants to needy present and former national athletes to further their education. Since the establishment of the Fund, fifteen (15) athletes have benefited from it.

We believe you will consider this event worthy of your support and we hope to personally welcome you at the Saujana Golf & Country Club on Tuesday, 11th September 2007.

For further information on entries, kindly contact: the OCM at 03-2715 2810 and the SGCC at 03-7846 1466.
