About Tan Sri Alexander Yu Lung Lee

Tan Sri Alexander Yu Lung Lee is the son of the late Tun Sir Henry H.S. Lee, Malaysia's first Finance Minister and founder of the Development and Commercial Bank. A former student of Victoria Institution and Batu Road Primary Boys School, Tan Sri Alex Lee obtained his LLB and Master’s in Cambridge, England and was admitted to London's Inner Temple. On his return in 1962 he joined Skrine & Co where he practised law for 15 years. He contested and won the Batu parliamentary seat in the 1986 general election and was later appointed Deputy Agriculture Minister. He also held the portfolios of Deputy Works Minister and Deputy Minister of National Unity and Social Development until 1995 when he did not seek for re-election

Tan Sri Alex Lee was the ultimate sportsman. In Cambridge, where he read law, he excelled in tennis, hockey, rugby, rowing and badminton. But it was in golf and tennis that he made much headway. He was a Putra Cup trainee and in tennis, represented Malaysia in the Davis Cup. At 60, he was a single (seven) handicapper in golf and was Kuala Lumpur Royal Lake Club champion in squash. Tan Sri Alex Lee’s passion for squash drove him to raise Malaysian squash from minnows to world power. He was at the helm of the squash Rackets Association of Malaysia that simultaneously boasted two world junior champions in Nicol David and Ong Beng Hee.

Tan Sri Alex Lee comes from a rare breed of officials who had a good grasp of sports. He was the vice president of the Olympic Council of Malaysia and was one of those who could recite the Olympic Charter by heart. Securing the 1998 Commonwealth Games was one of his biggest contributions as he was largely responsible for packaging the successful Malaysian bid. An innovative bid that offered team sports such as rugby and cricket, financial assistance to poorer countries to compete in the Games and harping on the turn of a developing country to host the Games.

Tan Sri Alex Lee was the Chef de Mission of the Malaysian Contingent to the 11th Asian Games in Beijing in 1990, a Board Member of Sukom Ninety Eight Berhad, and a Vice Chairman of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF). For his outstanding contributions to sport and the CGF Tan Sri Alex Lee was awarded posthumously, the “Lifetime Achievement Award” by the CGF in 2002.

Tan Sri Alex Lee died in a scuba diving accident in Papua New Guinea in 31st October 1999.
