CDM of Thailand’s ASEAN Schools Games Contingent Visits OCM

The Chef de Mission of the Thailand’s ASEAN Schools Games contingent, Dr. Patanachart Kridiborworn (better known as Dr. Pat), visited OCM on Friday 16 July 2010. He was received by Mr Chua Hong Tam. Dr. Pat who was accompanied by his Liaison Officer Ms Ba’yah Bachok, Assistant Secretary with the Human Resource Management Divison, Ministry of Education.

CONGRATULATIONS AZIEM ATHIRA ABDULLAH FOR BEING ONE OF THE TOP FIVE PARTICIPANTS

Singapore’s Ministry of Information, Communication and the Arts (MICA) have once again invited Ms Aziem Athira Abdullah, from Seafield Secondary School, Subang Jaya, who was a participant in MICA’s Young Reporters Training Camp 2009 (YRTC), to return to Singapore during the Youth Olympic Games in August 2010.

2nd ASEAN Schools Games 2010

The 1st ASEAN Schools Games was held in Thailand from 22nd to 27th July 2009 with 10 sports, namely, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Golf, Gymnastics, Sepaktakraw, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Volleyball with 116 events. 5 countries, Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, participated in 2009. Malaysia did not participate because of out-break of H1N1. Thailand was first with 72 gold medals, Vietnam had 18 gold medals, Indonesia and Singapore 13 gold medals each.

Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) – a feather in the cap for the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA)

On joining the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) in January 2009, one of several tasks was to begin a flow of news from the OCA’s 45 National Olympic Committees.

There is a tremendous amount of work that goes on behind the scenes of every National Olympic Committee (NOC), in terms of planning events, organising courses and preparing teams to compete in multi-sports events such as the Olympic Games, Asian Games and, for some, the Commonwealth Games and regional festivals like the SEA Games.

ACC Track Asia Cup 2010 - Malaysia Round
The Track Asia Cup was launched by the Asian Cycling Confederation (ACC) in 2003 with the objective to raise the standard of Track Cycling in Asia. The Championship has since developed from a small number of participating nations to an extremely important competition of the International Cycling Union (UCI). The 1st leg of the 2010 Track Asia Cup was held in Hokodate, Japan, from 12th to 14th June 2010. The 2nd leg was co-organized by the National Sports Council (NSC) and the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) in Cheras Velodrome, Kuala Lumpur, from 25th to 27th June 2010. The Opening Ceremony of the 2nd leg was held on 24th June 2010 at 8.00 pm at the Olympic Sports Hotel. The Opening Ceremony was graced by Hon. Minister of Youth and Sports Malaysia, YB Dato' Ahmad Shabery Cheek. Important guests at the Opening Ceremony were Mr. Tatsuo Hayashi, President of UCI International Commissaire, Tuan Haji Abu Samah Wahab, President of Malaysian National Cycling Federation, Y.Bhg. Dato' Zolkples Embong, Director General of NSC, Tuan Haji Ab. Jalil Abdullah, Director of Event Management Division NSC. OCM was represented by its Hon Asst. Secretary, Ms. Moira Tan and Mr. Fong Wan Hor.

29th OCM Annual General Assembly 2010
The 29th OCM Annual General Assembly 2010 was held on 26th June 2010 at 9.30 a.m. at the OCM Indoor Sports Arena, Level 3, OCM Indoor Sports Complex, Wisma OCM Phase II, Kuala Lumpur. A total of 33 Ordinary Members with 78 delegates, 11 Associate members with 12 non-voting delegates, and observers from the Sports Commissioner’s Office, the National Sports Council Malaysia and the Institute of Sports Malaysia, attended the above General Assembly. Except for Vice President, Ms. Low Beng Choo, who was overseas, all the elected Office Bearers of OCM were present. Present were also the Director of the National Olympic Academy, Dr. Tan Siew Eng, the President of the Malaysian Athletes Commission, Ms. Phan Su Ming and the Hon Secretary, Ms. Chee Ee Laine.

2010 FIBA – Asia Congress
The 2010 FIBA – Congress was held at the Park Royal Hotel, Kuala Lumpur on 20th June 2010. The incumbent President of FIBA – Asia, Sheikh Saud Ali Al-Thani of Qatar, retained his post as President of FIBA – Asia for the Session 2010/2014. He defeated Mr. Carl Ching of Hong Kong in a straight by 25 votes to 17 votes, with one spoilt vote.

In the election for 1st Vice President, Mr. Adel Al-Assoumi of Bahrain who won easily with 28 votes out of a total of 42 votes. The other posts were uncontested.

The 2010 Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay
The Queen’s Baton Relay is a tradition of the Commonwealth Games, which was started at the Cardiff 1958 Commonwealth Games in Wales. Since then it has been held during every Games. The Queen’s Baton Relay is held in all the 71 member Commonwealth Games Associations thus providing an opportunity for them to celebrate a little of the Commonwealth Games in their own country. The 2010 Queen’s Baton Relay carries a message from Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth to Delhi, where it will be taken out from the Baton and read to the athletes at the Opening Ceremony of the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

The 2010 Commonwealth Games Baton Relay Fun Run
After the official 2010 Queen’s Baton Relay in Melaka, the Queen’s Baton was sent to Kuala Lumpur, where it was on display at the 2010 Commonwealth Games Baton Relay Fun Run. The object of the Fun Run was to publicise and support the XIX Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010, which will be held from 3rd to 19th October 2010, as well as to provide an opportunity to all ordinary sports fans and hobby runners, from teenagers to veterans of both gender to see the Queen’s Baton at close range, to have photographs taken with the Baton, etc.

The Fun Run was held at Dataran Merdeka at 7.30 a.m. of 13th June 2010. The Run was over 5 Km. Over 200 runners participated in the Fun Run, including a large number of Indian expatriates in Kuala Lumpur, whose participation gave the Fun Run a big boost. There was also good support from the Royal Selangor Club Hash.
