The Host City of 20th SEA Games - Brunei Darusallam
Location
Brunei Darusslam (means The Abode of Peace) is situated on the north-west of the
island of Borneo. It has a total area of 5,765 KM. It is bounded on the north by a
coastline of about 161 KM along the South China Sea, and all other sides by the
Malaysian State of Sarawak.
Brunei divided into 4 main district, the western portion of the country forms
Brunei/ Muara. Then there are Tutong and Belait and in the eastern part the
Temburong district.
Weather
Brunei has a tropical climate with uniform temperature from between 22 degrees
celcius and 31 degrees celcuis, high humidity and heavy rainfall. The monsoon
season occurs September to January and May to July with an average annual
rainfall of about 280 cm.
Population
Brunei has an estimated population of 314, 000 people, divided into 53% male
and 47% female. This is growing at a rate of 2.5% a year. 68% of teh population
are native Bruneians and are called Malays. Another 17% are Chinese. Other
indigenous groups account for a further 6% and the remaining 9% are Europeans,
Indian andothers, The largest percentage of the population, 65.9%, live in the
Brunei/ Muara district and the smallest, 2.9%, are in the Temburong district.
Religion
The official religionof Brunei, as laid down in the Brunei written Constitution,
follows the Sunni starnd of Islam. It plays a central role in the everyday life of the
people. The Sultan is the head of the Islamic Faith in the country. Other faiths are
also practised in Brunei including Christianity and Buddhism.

The Games Village
The Games Village situated in Jalan Ong Sum Ping in Bandar Seri Begawan will play host to
the athletes and officials of the 20th SEA Games in August 1999. It is centrally located
in Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei Darussalam with only ten minutes drive from
the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sport Complex. |
| The Games Village
comprises of 13 residential blocks and 4 administration and facilities block in area of 12
hectares (30 acres) site. It will house up to 4,300 athletes and officials in 474
apartments. Each apartment unit will have 3 to 5 bedroom, fully furnished and
air-conditional. |
