The XX Commonwealth Games in Glasgow was an emotional one for the Malaysian Contingent. Taking place just a week after the tragic loss of passengers and crew of MH17, the opening ceremony parade saw the Malaysian Contingent, led by flagbearer Fatehah Mustafa and Chef de Mission Dato’ Ong Poh Eng, wearing black armbands as a sign of respect for those who lost their lives on MH17. Additionally, the first row of athletes during the march-in wore the uniforms of the Malaysia Airlines cabin crew.
On the field, the athletes fell one gold medal short of the targeted seven to come back with six (6) gold medals, seven (7) silver and six (6) bronze medals. The three gold medals were won by the badminton squad, while the rest were from weightlifting, squash and diving.
Emblem
The emblem of the XX Commonwealth Games is derived from time, data and measurement, with four distinctive parts.
The outer ring that encompasses the others, is a strong vibrant red – the official “True Red” of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) palette and symbolises the XX Commonwealth Games.
The next ring, in “Triumph Yellow” from the CGF palette, represents the number of sports organised at the XX Commonwealth Games (i.e. 17 sports). The ring is exactly 17/20ths of the size of the outer red ring.
The blue ring, rendered in the CGF's “Heritage Blue”, and is 11/20th of the size of the circle and represents the 11 days of the event. At the heart of the rings is the letter “G” representing “Glasgow” and also meaning “Dear Green Place” in Gaelic”.
The logo was developed by Marque Creative Ltd.
Mascot
Clyde's story is inspired by the past – a real ship called the SS Cameronia built on the Clyde in 1920 – but set in the present day. Clyde is a cheeky wee thistle who has been nurtured by seafaring Scot, Captain Bristle.
Captain Bristle was to set sail around the Commonwealth and to remember the Dear Green Place he took a pot of thistles on his travels. As he travelled to each of the 71 nations and territories of the Commonwealth, loading and unloading cargo and passengers, he went for a wee walk to plant a thistle, leaving a small piece of Scotland in each place.
When he returned back to Glasgow he had one thistle left in his Captain's trunk which he planted, pride of place, in his front garden. That little thistle grew taller and stronger, day by day, until one night he saw a shooting star and realised he had a huge destiny – to tell the world about the Commonwealth Games and welcome to Glasgow the friends from all the far-flung destinations he had travelled to.
Clyde is named after the river that flows through the city of Glasgow.

Dato’ Sieh Kok Chi was born on the 8th of November 1938. After his retirement in 1991, as an Engineer in the Department of Irrigation and Drainage Malaysia, Dato’ Sieh chose to continue his involvement, full time, in the field of sports, where his life-long passion was, especially in the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM).
Born on 21st March 1949, Y.A.M Tunku Tan Sri Imran is the second son of the late Tuanku Jaafar, an elected monarch of the Negeri Sembilan. Tunku Imran was educated in the UK at the King’s School, Canterbury and studied law at Nottingham University before being called to the Bar at Gray’s Inn, London in 1971 and qualifying as a Barrister at Law.
